Let's Help Gaza

What can we do for Gaza? Pray. Yes, they truly need our prayers but let's move on to the next level. We've been watching the new, talking about it, maybe more than a bit depressed, angry, yes, but that's not enough. let's proceed into action.

It's the 9th day and there's 507 people killed and 2400 injured. Last time I checked the news I saw videos of empty shelves in markets. they are suffering from shortage of food, hospitals ran out of medical supplies, no electricity, no water, and I as a result of bombing the sewage is not working and flooding in certain areas. Every single donation counts.

UNRWA is a reliable and legal organization that you can help Gaza through. See their homepage:

Stop the Killing in Gaza

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Karen AbuZayd, expressed her horror to the extensive destruction visited upon Gaza Strip today and her deep sadness to the terrible loss in human life. UNRWA, the United Nation’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, strongly urges the Israeli Government to heed calls for ceasing its bombardment on Gaza. Israel is a signatory to international conventions that protect non-combatants in times of conflict. These conventions are worthless if they are not upheld. ...more

hi, just got here from touta's blog. donations help but isn't the solution. the only alternative i can see is a new place for the palestinians, perhaps someone could start a movement to find a country that would sell some territory and convince the international community to provide the funds for the land and development. i don't know if this idea is utopian but this would be the perfect moment for such thing.

Good for you Attawie for taking action! It is a wonderful thing when people come together to help others. I hope that all the donated food and medical supplies will reach the people of Gaza soon. I know they are in dire need. Sadly, the fighting continues to escalate.

pepe, your utopian solution is far from utopian.

Palestin is an occupied land, the land of Plaestinians, occupied by Israel since 1948. if you want to suggest a utopian solution, how about you suggest the occupiers leave and not the owners of the land? how about that for an incredibly shocking principle?

A saying: The biggest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, its the illusion of knowledge.

If you would like to get more information about the Plastinian issue in two easy steps, please go to:

khalid, that'd be great if israel gave back their land, but that won't happen, never. at this moment israel is building a new permanent illegal settlement, right? to find another land to palestinians is utopian, i know, but at least is a solution, highly improbable but not impossible. if you have a better and possible one, i'd like to know because i can't see another way to solve this problem.

Come on Pepe, :)

if you think that's the "Utopian" solution for everyone we wouldn't let all this happen. The idea of receiving Palestinian refugees all over the world back then and now were based on that.

Tell me if someone wants to take your home, the home you were raised in for years and years, the home you inherited from your grandparents, the home full of memories, the home that represents you identity, even if it was remains of old building and outdated style, if someone wants to take that home away from you, what would you do?

I have, and will continue, to pray for Gaza. But let's not make this a one-sided Israel versus Palestine issue. Gaza needed our prayers just as badly in 2007, when Hamas was storming through weddings and executing their own people for something as simple as singing a song. Now that is quite sick. It sounds more like something that would happen in the tribal belts of Pakistan, but Hamas was able to bring it right into the coastal strip.

Thanks for praying for Gaza and for "looking out for what's best for humanity" and for "trying to talk some sense into those who are not". I would supposed that you'll be able to understand that:

1. Israel is occupying Palestine, according to the UN definition of Occupation.
2. Resistance is a civil right for the occupied land, as stated by the UN too.

Check the links Khalid provided and pepe's too. (a very good one that I'm still watching it right now).

Foot Note: if any reader is not well informed of the history and what's going right now on Palestinian soil then refer to the recommended links before thinking of commenting here.

"David, Unfortunately the UNRWA has became a target now."

I saw that on the news Attawie. I don't think that Israeli troops deliberately targeted the UN food convoy. Some idiot Israeli soldier probably wasn't careful what he was shooting at. Still, the UN suspending its food deliveries is really going to hurt hungry and thirsty Palestinians who are dependent on the food and water coming from outside of Gaza. A few days ago, I learned that 750,000 residents of Gaza are completely dependent on the food convoys. That is half the population! I didn't realize how vulnerable the people there are to starvation. They can't grow their own food and they don't have enough fresh water. I can see how so many people living there are so frustrated that they want to lash out violently. However, violence only begets more violence. It is not the answer.

I was reading a few days ago about the upcoming Israeli elections. There is some talk that the Kadema party may be willing to join in a coalition government with Arab Israeli members of the Knesset. If this happens, it will be a first for Israel. Never before has there been a joint government there that included both Jews and Arabs. I don't know if this will happen, but I hope that it will. Up to now, Arab Israelis have been treated like second class citizens in Israel. If Israeli Jews can learn to treat their Arab citizen neighbors as equals, then maybe they can make a just peace with their Palestinian neighbors, as well.

Attawie, do you support an immediate cease fire between Hamas and Israel? I do.

What do you think a long term solution to the Palestine Israeli question might look like?

1/10/2009 11:32 AM
Blogger Khalid said...

Dear Pepe,

Its out of question: the mere idea of suggesting finding an alternative home for palestinians is the most extremely offensive, they are willing to die, every last one of them, to stay in that land. As i told you, really the worst enemy of knowing the truth is not not-knowing it, but its assuming that you know it. and you, like most forigners, dont. because most of the sources of information you have availble come from the Israeli/American side and you only hear their side of the story.

Anyways.

i read through the comments and couple of points stuck to my mind and i am going to try to address them:

1. Hamas: Hamas actually treat their people very, very good. Hamas works as a social charity organization, providing all kinds of aid to people. It's well known to be transperant and people trust that its leaders are not corrupted. and these are some of the most important reasons why Hamas had such a victory in the Palestinian elections, the first real elections in the Arab world that i know of, real transperatn elections with UN supervision, and Hamas won, people love Hamas, wether you like it or not, becasue it provides them with lots of services adn because they see that Hamas is sincere and straight.

let's see if Attawi allows this conversation to continue here or if she is not OK with it, we can finish it elsewhere if not, what do you think attawie?

2. The solution is this: more people around the world caring. when they care, they will go to couple of wbsites like that one i linked to, and will read and educate themselves about the Palestinains issue and will learn about the history of it. and then they will learn about all the UN resolutions that Israel simply wouldnt do. and will lobby to make their goverments apply pressure on Israel to comply to them.

This is something that can onlybe done using the help of the international community. israel acts like a gangster and simply doesnt listen to what UN says. Make it.

Peace ways, like Ghandi's are out of question, Palestinians have tried every possible way, peace included, but it will never, ever work, because Israel is a settling occupation, it aims to occupy more lands and settle more people in it. if you dont fight that back, you only give them chance to occupy more. if you stand still they will run their tanks over you in their way to occupy more, they do not care how many civillian casualties it takes to get to their goal, just look at the figures this far, and please do take a loot at the number of total casualties for the last 60 years for example, in the www.ifamericansknew.org website, you will see that this is not something to reason with with peace. Israel has intentionally targetted UNRWA schools int he last few days, three schools, killing numbers of children, inspite of the continious announcements by the UNRWA that theirs chools are OK and that nobody is hid ing in them or using them, and then they attacked a UNRWA convoy killing some of UNRA staff forcing it to leave Plastine, one of the bibest providers of aid for over 750 000 people. They targeted medics of the red cross and killed one, sniper shot. During the years, ambulance cars have been systimatically targetted, sniper shots to kill their drivers. thousands of Palestinians have been killed on checkpoints only because Israel wouldnt let them pass to wherever they are going to the nearest medical center. thousands of women have given birth on these checkpints while waiting too.

You do not reason with this kind of immoral, inhumane enemy, you do not say: alright we will sit in peace and wait for you to be polite and considerate and appreciate our nice-ess. that would be just... mental.

THe chance of peace comes by returning some of the rights that have been taking, at least allowing 4 million refugees to come back to Plaestine. those are a major issue in the palestinain fight. allowing 4 million refugees to go back to thir lands, that israel prevents them from entering palestine. you however as an american or european can go without a visa even. how do you reason with that?!

there is a way for peace, you either say: the international community is there, it doesnt accept injustice, and we will act now to make Israel apply the UN resolutions that it has been neglecting. Or you say: there is no such thing as international community: Palestinians we are sorry, we are too weak, or we dont really care, you go and fight to get your rights yourself. or fight to at least defend yourselves. and then they would tell you: well, we are.

C.H,

I saw the doc Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land? These are facts known in our side of the world. The news filtering was informative for me. We knew what kind of propaganda that Americans or the rest of the world are being exposed to. That's why we don't have problem with US people or other nations. We understand that entire nations are being misled.

Occupation 101 is more about the roots of the entire case.

I don't want to go through the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan talks. The entire area was occupied back then and Palestine was given to israel on a plate of gold. That's bring me back to my previous comments and repeating myself. "Do not comment here unless you see all the parts of Occupation 101, and all the links provided in this comment section".

Read khalid's comment and you'll be able to sense my unspoken words about you other question.

Pepe, apologies accepted :)
The metaphor of homeland and homes is just to explain how it feels to let go. I'm sure you'll decide to save your loved ones and leave but that cannot be said for an entire country.

Letting go of a homeland is not even close to letting go of your home :) Why? I tell you why. Because 2003 I left my house and my homeland. Do I miss my house? yes, for sure. Do I miss my homeland? yes, MADLY. But I care more about Iraq than my own house. I don't mind building a new house as long as it's in my sweet beloved Iraq. Giving me a home in other countries may keep me safe for a while, just like studying abroad and traveling the world but for a place that i would settle in, I hope and wish and pray I can go back to Iraq.

David,
About UNRWA, you can find the answer in khalid's comment. That what we saw on TV and it was LIVE from Gaza.

It's such a shame that you can't access our TV channels and the BBC and CNN you watch are broadcasting only to you i.e part of the propaganda we were talking about regarding the doc.

Anand,
You're welcome here :)
Israel won't abide to "cease fire" permanently. They have been playing this game for decades now.

Khalid,
Are you trying to get into contest with David on "who's comment is the longest"?

lol

but that was very informative and I hope that readers would pay attention and read before replying.

As for the debate. I don't mind giving this small part of the humble blog of mine to enlighten people even if it wasn't me who's being the "enlightener". If readers wish to keep it polite and honest and for the sake of mutual understanding then let it be and I'm glad for it :)

khalid, thanks for your answer. if you say that they would never consider a country out of palestine and prefer to fight and live in confinement i won't argue, you probably know better than me. but i have to say it is hard to believe. a lot of people abandoned their homes throughout history looking for a better place to live, think about the millions of europeans that went to america. the difference in that they had a choice and palestinians don't. the solution you proposed is great but that will never happen. perhaps if palestinians had blonde hair and blue eyes they would "inspire" some caring, but they don't.

attawie, i understand what you said about homeland, but do palestinians still have one? iraq still exists, baghdad is today a city populated by iraqis, but that is not true for palestine. palestine is gone, it is occupied by jews and they won't give it back and won't stop their expansion.

Khalid,

This is what Hamas is, and this is how they treat their own people. Back in 2006, a Palestinian family organized a wedding and decided they wanted to sing song. Hamas didn't like that idea too much, and crashed their trucks into the crowd before opening fire, beating, and even killing some of those attending the event. Hamas is the enemy of Islam and an enemy of the Arab world.

Khalid and Attawie, are you open to a two state solution where the Palestinians get the West Bank and Gaza?
My plan:
The 120 settlements would all become desegregated. Anyone would be able to buy a house anywhere in Palestine without preference, and the 500,000 Israeli settlers would become Palestinian citizens who contribute to Palestinian society.

Israel and the international community would fund a Marshall plan aimed at improving the Palestinian economy. Israelis would be encouraged to visit, do business in and invest in Palestine. They would all be subject to Palestinian law.

The Palestinian refugees that left in 1948 would get financial compensation (or their heirs.) Most of their descendants have now become a part of their new adopted homes (after 60 years) and few would probably want to return to Palestine after all this time.

Khalid, Hamas, isn't as perfect as you imply. The Palestinian economy is a disaster. Most of the Palestinian government spending is paid for by foreign grants rather than Palestinian government tax revenue (which is very limited.) Hamas spends what other countries (Europe, Gulf, America, Canada, Japan, Iran etc.) give it in grants. Hamas might spend what it is given more efficiently than Fatah (although I don't have evidence for this), but since Hamas doesn't pay for its social services, shouldn't most of the credit go to the people who pay for Hamas' social services?

Khalid, how much business development has Hamas brought to the West Bank and Gaza? Let us remember that governments don't create wealth, but merely facilitate the private sector.

Hamas isn't perfect, it has many failures. My hope is that Hamas and Fatah get their act together or are replaced by Palestinian voters by better leaders.

On another note, Iraq has also had free elections under UN supervision. Which elections (Iraqi or Palestinian) do all of you think went better?

1/11/2009 1:35 AM
Blogger Khalid said...

Anand,

:)

Thanks for your comment, i for some reason opened this page and my eyes cought your comment and i will reply to it first:

You pretty much discribed everything that Palestinains are demanding, assuming that you mean by "gaza and the west bank" the pre-1976 lines. however Palestinians feel that Israelis have absolutely no intentions or interest in peace whatsoever, they have interest in occupying more lands only, and neglecting any peace agreements, any human rights treaties, any UN laws that gets in their way. ANy talk of peace is a simple of matter of PR and stalling to by time to get to occupy more lands.

however, the finanicla settlment for the refugees issue will not be acceptable, no palestinian representative or politican, no matter hos corrupt they are, will ever agree to that becuase they would know this would be the end of them. Palestinians would never agree to this.

As for Hamas: I never said Hamas is perfect, in the matter of fact, i have my own personal reasons, for which i dont like hamas. however, what you said is very inaccurate: Hamas has been a charity organization historically. way before it became in power, and the only reason Palestine faces such severe economical situation in the time of Hamas, is that the western hypocrate world, decided to boycot the palestinain goverment after hamas got in power, enforcing an international embargo on it, in a collective punishment for palestinians for voting to hamas, the whole world said this: we are for democracy! but as long as the results of democracy suits us, when they dont and you elect the "wrong" people, we will put sanctions on you and make you starve.

As for the Iraqi elections, this is simply straight untrue, there was never UN supervision, and it was far, way far from being honest. However, the outcome of these elections, the Iraqi perliment, is constantly neglected by the iraqi goverment that is appointed and backed up by the occupation, the Iraqi goverment tries to pass all possible laws, such as asking for renwal of UN mandate of asking the occupation to stay, without getting back to the parlimant which is completely illegal, and so on for many other major cases, the parlimant consists of many different parties, the very majority of them are against the occupation, the very majority of them (almost all of them) have signed agreements such like the Cairo agreement stating that the US presence is occupation and that it should leave etc. the very majority of it is against dividing iraq into smaller fractions. while the Iraqi goverment, appointed and backed by the occupation, is against all that.

I would say, however, that the palestinians election was far more representative to the will of people, nobody in the entire world, including the scums of fateh, even dared to say once that Hamas didnt win fair and square.

As for the private sector, it is physically impossible to facilitate its work under the Israeli occupation, my family for exaple wanted to make an investment in Palestine, my father was invited by the Palestinian goverment among a selection of Palestinian buisnessmen from around the world, to attend a conference for palestinian buisnessmen inside Palestine. the checkpoints, the Israeli checkpoints cut neighbors off each other, its virtually impossible to have any sustainable kind of trade that is on a scale bigger than a neighborhood, transportation is physically impossible.

You obviosluy are well informed and keep close eye on the middle east issues, Anand, but nevertheless, all these details i discussed, are things you can never grasp from the outside, you have to be an insider, live inside a country yourself, to get to know all these details, and there comes the power of blogging, getting the account of those who actually LIVE the news! :)

i hope my comment answered your question :)

attawie, all large democracies have problems with some voters trying to vote more than once. The question is whether Iraq has significantly more voter fraud than the world's other large democracies. BTW, the UN officially ran and certified the Iraqi elections. As we all know, the UN is imperfect and flawed. I also disagree that the Palestinian elections were more fair than the Iraqi elections.

khalid jarrar, I would be interested in hearing more about business development in the occupied territories.

The Iraqi Parliament chose Maliki as PM (Muqtada and Khamanei played a large role in selecting him in 2006.) The Parliament also passed SOFA, which will be subject to the July 30th national referendum.

The last national opinion poll that Iraq conducted showed that 77% of Iraqis wanted US troops to train and equip the Iraqi Army. 80% wanted US troops to fight Al Qaeda inside Iraq.

Khalid, you have every right to strongly disagree with most of your fellow Iraqis. However, you must know that the vast majority of brave lions serving in the Iraqi Army strongly disagree with you. They want US troops to train and equip them a little longer

Iraq has begged many countries to help train and equip their army. All the countries that can help only offered token help, except for America and Iran. The sad fact is that no country (which has a capable military) is willing to sacrifice to train and equip the Iraqi Army other than America.

This said, you are right that there shouldn't be long term bases in Iraq. President Bush has repeatedly said since 2004 that US troops would leave Iraq if asked by the Iraqi government and that the US did not want long term bases. President Elect Obama has said the same thing.

You might think that Iran should train the Iraqi army without any US help. Most in the Iraqi Army disagree. Iran's army has proven that it doesn't fight very well. It fought badly in the 1980s. It also did a poor job training Muqtada's Jaish al Mahdi militia. When Maliki ordered the Iraqi Army to fight 'rogue' JAM in Basrah and Sadr city during the spring of 2008, JAM--and its Iranian advisors--were quickly torn apart by the Iraqi Army. Why would the Iraqi Army want to be trained by an inferior army? The Iraqi Army wants to be the best quality military in the middle east. The fastest and cheapest way to do this is to accept temporary American help.

There is nothing wrong with accepting American help. America helped train and equip the South Korean and Japanese militaries. Today both of them are better quality than the Israeli military. In fact, they are among the best quality militaries in the world.

David,
I had some spaghetti left overs this afternoon. Next time I'll remember and post you your portion :)

America and Iran, it sounds like a tacky movie. I don't get it and it's not funny at all. Iraq went through hell and everything is upside down when it was "suspected" of developing WMD. And look at Iran!
A lot was said about the role USA played before and during 1980s Iraq-Iran war. I don't want to go through all these talks :) All I know that people of many nations suffer for the mistakes their leaders do.

Anand,
Iraqi army was one of the best during the last century, except that the first decision was made after the invasion was to dissolve this army. Today's army is merely a joke :)
